D4: Malicious Compliance and COVID Shutdowns
Freedom fries of NY. The way this has blown up ties back to my discussion of the problems of believing science instead of applying the knowledge science provides. A beer is COVID unsafe, but a beer plus “food” somehow has less risk? Also, chips aren’t food, but chips and salsa is? People naturally sense the issue and this is the response.
D6: What is your notebook’s weight class?
D8: “On Keeping a Notebook”
Both Austen Kleon and Joan Didion got me thinking about notebooks this week. I have, on and off, kept a bullet journal for the past few years. I also have a large, hardbound sketchbook that serves as commonplace book and idea book. I think perhaps ideas need to move to a more portable notebook whose material may or may not be promoted.. Maybe I’ll even it weigh it first.
D12: A new yet very old adventure
This week I got the first five and the most recent two issues of Alarms & Excursions. It has been a long time since I was in an APA, and that was short lived. I’m thinking about trying again. Even if you aren’t interested in an APA as a current activity, you can get a great sense of the history of the hobby in older issues.
Video of the Week
This letter/diary was written four years and a month before my birth, but I feel a strong kinship with the writer. It is the same kinship that leads me to admit on a personal level I find the Kursk disaster more distressing than 9/11. I cannot easily put myself in the place of the people who died in the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, or Flight 593. I can always put myself in the place of a submariner and hazards of his life.
Song of the Week
I first found Release the Archers a few years back through the song “General of the Dark Army“. Apex, their last album, was a huge level up for the band in terms of quality. “Soulbound” is the second single for Abyss, due out in 33 days.
